Beans + Plasticware = Science!
Nothing says science quite like some dried beans and a plastic fork!
This week my students when on an awesome adventure into a forest as we explored predator vs. prey relationships, population density, animal competition, and so much more!
With a huge tape box in the middle of the room, a whole bunch of plasticware, and some creativity my kids turned into birds and the beans transformed into worms. As we reviewed genetic variation students randomly were assigned spoons, forks, or knifes which represented beaks. They crawled across the floor picking up pinto beans with plastic and delivering them to their nests represented by Styrofoam cups.
This is no doubt about it one of the most engaging labs ever and I really can’t recommend it enough!
For more details and directions check out the free resources in this science list!
Then try it out in your own room to discover why these kids are so proud of their spoons!
PS– Be sure to put a note in the middle of your classroom floor before you leave for the day! This is a multi-day lab and your awesome janitors will sweep up your “mess” if you aren’t careful. Trust me. Last year I walked in one morning without any worms
