Have you ever been behind the scenes of a movie or TV set? It is pretty wild. Totally not what you would expect. The producers and stage crew do an incredible job of making the area seem HUGE from your screen, but the reality is the areas are really small. I experienced some behind the scenes action when I was in LA a few years ago. I was on the set of every elderly lady’s favorite mid morning program, Let’s Make a Deal. From your 60 inch plasma screen Door #1, Door #2, and Door #3 look the size of industrial garages. The truth is, they are about the size of shed. Just big enough to get a low-budget two-door car through for the deal of the day…
The whole point to this comparison is the people working behind the scenes do a remarkable job of making the entire show look amazing and get it delivered to you to make your day better.
Cooks at schools do the exact same thing.
In my middle school there is a crew of ladies who work from about 6-3 everyday bringing 800+ kids two meals a day. They are the people getting my students fed with nutrients so I can feed their brain with knowledge. They load up thousands of tator tots a day and serve up countless slices of square pizza. They put up with some crazy behaviors in the line and I would like to believe they get a pleasant thank you from every adolescent patron, but that would be like believing teachers getting paid what they deserve.
Here is one of my super star cooks, Cheryl Blair. This year she got some of the praise and attention she should get every day. Aramark served her up the Ring of Stars award. A prestigious honor given to only 200 of the over 250,000 employees.
This makes her one of the greatest heroes of our hall!
