Traditional letter grades in school continue to be an ineffective measure.
Because what do an A, B, or C really mean?
What if we focused more on encouraging kids to reflect on these 3 Life Goals:
- Do things well
- Do things before you are asked
- Do more than expected
Those are about excellence. Excellence isn’t always an A+
Memorization isn’t worth straight As
Here is a real life conversation with one of my students…
“I got an A+ on my test, Ms. G!”
“That’s awesome! Tell me what that A+ means.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, tell me what you learned on that test.”
“Oh, I have no idea, I just memorized the study guide.”
We simply have to reform what grades and learning actually means.
