Adults: Our Job is NOT To Keep Kids Happy

Here is a hard truth bomb…

Our job is not to keep kids happy.

Our job is to keep kids human.

Stay with me and hear me out for a second.

A while back I went to dinner at a spot with outdoor seating.

The weather was absolutely beautiful.

The food was super delicious.

The company was awesome.

The experience was perfect.

But as I looked around the restaurant I noticed many kids were also dining at this spot.  Kids of all ages.

I counted 12 of them.  And 10/12 of those kids had a device in their hands.  IPads, cell phones, one legit had a full computer at the table.

They didn’t make a sound.

Their faces were glued to the screen.

No crying.

No complaining.

But also no conversation.

My heart broke.

The camaraderie that can happen around a table of food is so freaking powerful.

But it was being missed because of the connection to YotTube and Snapchat.

Don’t get me wrong, I TOTALLY understand how technology can be a great incentive for kids and also a nice opportunity for us adults to have a conversation with our significant others.

I get it, I really do.

In fact, I am not always opposed to technology at a table.

I do think there can be a time and place for it and there are unique situations where kids simply sitting at the table deserves to be celebrated.

But if we are using technology to keep kids “happy” then we are missing a really good opportunity to keep kids human.

Because nothing, and I mean thin will ever replace human to human, direct connection.

With so much love,
