Wait. How Am I Failing This Class? A Look at Grades…

An important reminder to education:

Grades should represent students have mastered a CONTENT area…

NOT how good they are at following directions, being kind, putting a name on paper, bringing a pencil, showing up, or any other BEHAVIOR.

We must strive to separate the two.

I continue to be fired up about grades.

If we are going to continue to use the traditional system of A-F we have to shatter the traditional way that credit and points are given.

-2 points for no name does not connect to the curriculum.

+3 points because you have a pencil is not a math standard.

Bonus points because you showed up does not prove learning.

I’m ALLLLLL for tracking this data and presenting that to adult stakeholders but an A in a class should mean the student is proficient in the class, just like an F in the class should prove no learning.

“But not doing work should have consequences!”

I agree.

But not linked to academic grading.

Refused to turn in work? Lunch detentions.  After school time.  Calls home.

These have to be the go-to before zeros. (mic drop)

With so much love,
