Teachers are good at spending money… on students.
Teachers get paid like $40,000/year and spend 10k of it on their students.
(Is that a dramatic over statement intended for effect? Yes and No. I made far less than that my 1st year teaching and it feels like we spend more than 10k a year on kids)
But here’s the thing. This isn’t really about money because…
If educators got paid $1,000,000/year they would still spend $250,000 on supplies for their kids.
Teachers are literally the ones stimulating the economy.
Do we have to spend that kind of money on kids? No.
Should we shame teachers who do? No.
Should we make teachers who don’t spend money on their classrooms feel bad? No.
Our income isn’t much, but our hearts are huge.
Our bonus comes in the form of pizza in the lounge, but the bonus love we get from kids is priceless.
Our budget is no-existent, but our classroom experiences are often priceless.
Our job is not about the money.
We went into this know what we would make.
It’s about the moments we get with the kids.
And that is why we do what we do
BUT, none of this changes the fact that we still deserve to be paid WAY more than what the education system is offering.
