Spirit Week During a Pandemic?

“Ms G is that a Malibu Barbie Sweatshirt…?”

Spirit week has to be one of my favorite weeks of the entire school year!

There is something ridiculously exiting about getting decked out in each day’s theme and then watching the kids walk through the hallways sporting their spirit wear

One of our Homecoming Themed days last year was Tye-Dye. The only problem was…. I had none.

I could have ran out to The Walmart and bought a white t-shirt, paints, and rubber bands to make one.

I could have hopped on The Amazon and primed something in real quick.

I could have made a trip to The Goodwill and found gear for fifty cents.

OR

I could own what I had in my closet at home and just go all out with fun colors and call it a try-dye color explosion day.

So clearly that’s what I did.

I had been waiting all school year for the perfect excuse to wear my rockin awesome Lisa Frank sweatshirt

Here was my moment

I got lots of “WOW! Ms. G! looking goods!”
I got a few, “oh my, you make my eyes hurt.”
I got a number of “Um… oks….”
I got plenty of, “only you would wear that….” And I got one “I love your Malibu Barbie shirt!”

But that brings us to spirit week 2020.

What does that look like this year?

Do we still have “homecoming week” even when sports aren’t happening?

Do we show school spirit when the world is going through a major crisis?

Do we get decked out and have fun in our hallways, even if each day our spirit-wear includes a mask?

Do we go all out for kids, even if they are only seeing this via a computer screen?

I think the answer is YES!

Something magical happens when we just have a little fun celebrating education with our students.

So let’s do it!
