Teacher Truth: This is A Lie Students Hear in Schools…

We tell kids…

You can be anything you want to be!

But the reality is, that just isn’t true!

Instead we should say…

You can be who you truly need to be.

Needs and wants are different.

That’s not being negative.

That’s being realistically empowering kids.

Let’s set kids up for an awesome, realistic future.

Listen, I’m all for encouraging kids SO much!

I think we have to push kids to new levels and show them what they are capable of both in and out of school.

But when we tell kids “you can be or do anything you work for” we just are missing the mark.

Now, I know every adult and every teacher means well when they say it, but there is a super simple way to remix this so it’s both encouraging AND realistic!

And that remix comes by replacing the word “want to be” with “need to be.”

Kids want to be mermaids.

But they need to be hard working.

Kids want to be millionaires.

But they need to be resilient.

Kids want to be pro athletes.

But they need to be gritty.

Now it’s our job to teach them out to achieve those needs.
