Unpopular Teacher Opinion: STOP Seeing the Big Picture

As teachers, we often get told, “we have to see the big picture.”

I understand that line of thinking, but I’m here to challenge that idea.

What if we forget the big picture?

Things like…Test scores, learning loss, graduate rates.

And instead we focus on teaching small skills really well.

School years are months

School days are hours

Great lessons are minutes

We win when we focus on the minutes.

Minutes matter more than we can ever imagine.

And school years are made up of about 75,600 minutes

That are a lot of little opportunities we have to teach awesome lessons to kids.

So maybe in 2024 we learn to zoom in, rather than zooming out to see the whole picture

Small things can make a massive difference over time.
